Jericho Sims did a lot of good things for the Milwaukee Bucks last season in limited playing time. Inserted into the lineup as a change-of-pace big, he supplied an athletic burst that helped the Bucks play more of a run-and-gun style offense. Based on some intriguing workout footage, fans wonder whether he’s added a new tool that could elevate his role in a major way.
Milwaukee Bucks Big Adding to His Bag?
Earlier this summer, the Bucks re-signed Sims for two years at the league minimum salary (player option in year two). Mostly, it’s a move that gives them frontcourt depth; Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis, and Myles Turner will eat up a lot of minutes there. Although the Bucks liked what Sims gave them last year, he might not have much of an opportunity for increased playing time.
That could change, though, if he has in fact discovered a previously absent skill: long-range shooting.

In four NBA seasons between the Knicks and Bucks, Sims has tried just one 3-pointer, a three-quarter quart heave. His shot attempts cluster around the rim in the form of lobs and putbacks. Extending his range beyond the arc, even exclusively in the corner spots, would do wonders for his game.
Unless I am seeing things, Jericho Sims has changed which hand he shoots with. He’s now shooting left handed.
According to https://t.co/JROS0wJ6Si he’s only attempted 1 3 in his career and there’s no video of it. I can’t even pull up a free throw right now to compare the form pic.twitter.com/1N1QLamVzZ

Before the video posting, many were under the impression that Sims shot right-handed, as he seems to have done in his time as a New York Knick. The word on the street is that he began practicing from the other side when a late-season injury in Milwaukee compromised his right hand.
Quotes about Sims’ ambidexterity from his college coach Shaka Smart, currently at Marquette, have also re-emerged. He apparently transitioned to shooting righty after high school. In light of the recent evidence, that development may have been reversed.

Of course, it’s probably best not to get too hyped over training video clips. Shooting uncontested in a practice gym is a lot different than letting it fly in a real game. But try telling that to excited Milwaukee fans who quite possibly haven’t ever seen Sims attempt a shot outside the paint…
He’s definitely a righty! This is wild…

…or to puzzled Knicks backers, who also haven’t seen him do anything of the kind.

Bruh couldn’t find this in his bag in the 4 years he was in NY 😔😔😔

In contrast to the last comment above, other New Yorkers expressed a more cynical attitude toward his seemingly reformed stroke.
Glad you finallt figured that out… he been doing that since high school. Now as yourself why this guy hasn’t progressed as a player when he had all this talent at his disposal

In a more positive way, a comment from Bucks expert Frank Madden also implicitly suggests we all temper our expectations.
Jericho Sims being ambidextrous and capable of burying a string of lefty threes in practice just further underscores how stupidly talented even “low skill” NBA players are. https://t.co/OjOjh7wjj9

Jericho Sims might still be Jericho Sims, doing things on a practice court that he wouldn’t/couldn’t do in a real game. Counting on him to showcase a polished jumper next season isn’t realistic, given his track record. It’s probably just a cool summer highlight video.

It’s also true that Bucks fans are familiar with a non-shooting big who transformed his shot later on in his career – none other than the recently departed Brook Lopez, a.k.a. Splash Mountain, now a Clipper. Needless to say, those in attendance at the Fiserv Forum might be eyeing Sims in pre-game warmups early on this season, just to see if he hoists up a few swishes.
