At linebacker, the Browns only have real attachment to Schwesinger and JOK. Diabate being able to position himself to be a starting option for the long-term would be the best case scenario for the team. However, even if Diabate is more of a role player and a valuable contributor on special teams, that could still see him retained. He may not get the extension he would prefer, but it could keep him on the team for at least another season.
The Browns revamped their defensive line, especially the interior. With what the team hopes provides more stability in addition to a consistently higher level of play, that could prove invaluable for Diabate as well as rookie Carson Schwesinger. Both are linebackers who can thrive when they can play fast and attack. If the opponent is focused on trying to stop the front, that could allow these two the freedom to fly around and make plays. The key for Diabate is making sure he reads everything clearly and makes sure he's consistently in the right position.
Short of an injury, both Hickman and Diabate look like safe bets to make the opening day roster. Hickman is going to get every opportunity to become a starting safety. Diabate's path to the field has a few more obstacles, but the Browns have incentives to see the 24-year old linebacker to succeed. These two have extended the reach of the 2023 draft for the Browns, one that already has a chance to pay massive dividends.
When the Browns were limited by draft capital, these types of additions became essential. Now that they once again have draft capital, it's an area that can give them an edge.
