Premier League club now set to release striker after reports of Leeds United interest - Fabrizio Romano

Leeds United have been interested in more than one player from Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United this summer.

Newcastle United have a few players Leeds United like and that they have looked at this summer, including Sean Longstaff and also Nick Pope.

Longstaff was first linked to the Whites back in March 2024 and persistent Leeds links to Longstaff won’t go away any time soon. The 27-year-old midfielder is very much on their shortlist this summer.

However, Callum Wilson is certainly one of the players on their radar after it was revealed in March that Wilson would leave Newcastle this summer.

Leeds target Callum Wilson leaves Newcastle United

The 49ers are looking at Premier League targets, and Leeds are among the clubs interested in Wilson. Of course, any move for £110k-per-week Newcastle striker is not guaranteed.

Newcastle and Wilson were in contract talks for a while but it seems the England international is set for a new chapter in his career.

Wilson will soon say goodbye to staff, fans, and teammates as he’s not staying at the club with his contract now expired and he is available on a free transfer.

Of course, Leeds already have a number of injury-prone strikers on their books but Wilson could provide firepower to Leeds despite his recent injury struggles and age.

Gabby Agbonlahor’s verdict on Callum Wilson

A move for Wilson from Leeds is deemed unlikely but his name hasn’t gone away all summer and Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Wilson is perfect for Leeds.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast with Alan Brazil (03/07/25), Agbonlahor said: “(Wilson) had so many injury problems last season — missed so much football.

“Leeds might look at something, but whatever package he gets at a Premier League club, it’s going to be like small wages and big appearance fees.

“They do that a lot for players who struggle with injuries.

“I’ll swipe right because Leeds need experience, and even if he gets 15 to 20 games next season, he will score goals.”

Burnley are also thought to be keen on Wilson now, but the striker is not guaranteed to remain in the Premier League for the next chapter in his football career.
