Callum Wilson has left Newcastle United after five years at St James’ Park.
Callum Wilson has admitted “all good things come to an end” after his Newcastle United exit was confirmed.
A memorable five years saw the 33-year-old remain a consistent goalscorer when fit despite several injury setbacks. It was only during those latter months when Wilson’s form declined - with Newcastle offering him a reduced deal as a result.
Wilson’s contract expired last Monday and final talks were held last week regarding his future. However, the striker has now announced he will leave St James’ Park after netting 49 goals across all competitions in five years.
Callum Wilson announces departure
“To all you Magpies, it's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon,” he wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.
“I am so proud to have worn the iconic No.9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say. All good things come to an end but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my family's hearts. Thank you for the memories.”
Newcastle United statement
A brief club statement appeared to confirm that Wilson made the ultimate decision. The announcement read: “Callum Wilson has confirmed he will depart Newcastle United after five seasons at the club.
“From scoring on his debut against West Ham in 2020 to wearing the iconic No. 9 shirt, Callum has played a huge part in our success in recent years and we thank him for all his contributions. Good luck for the future, CW9.”

Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson
Wilson appeared to bid farewell to Toon supporters after the final-day defeat to Everton. Speaking after the game, Howe hailed the striker’s impact and the effort he has given Newcastle.
“Let’s wait and see,” he said. “We’re going to sit down and talk with his representatives. What I can say is that Callum Wilson is, and has been, an incredible footballer for Newcastle.
“He’s someone who epitomises the spirit that has got us to where we are. He’s professional, brave - to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment he did, it was a difficult moment in the club’s history. The club needed hope - and Callum gave them hope. He dealt with the pressure and responsibility that role brings unbelievably well.
“He brings a positivity to the group, he’s a leader within the changing room, he’s just been incredible. Let’s wait and see what happens, but it was great to see him have that relationship with the supporters. There’s still so much respect there between the two.”
