Callum Wilson issues heartfelt Newcastle United statement as Leeds United watch on

Reported Leeds United target Callum Wilson has bid farewell to Newcastle United after rejecting a new incentivised deal, ending his five-year spell with the club.

Chronicle Live broke the news this morning that Wilson had turned down the contract extension and is now set to embark on a new chapter elsewhere. The forward's poignant farewell at the end of last season resonated with supporters, especially as he waved to fans following the 1-0 loss to Everton.

Newcastle issued an official statement expressing gratitude for Wilson's time at the club: "Callum Wilson has confirmed he will depart Newcastle United after five seasons at the club. From scoring on his debut against West Ham in 2020 to wearing the iconic number 9 shirt, Callum has played a huge part in our success in recent years and we thank him for all his contributions. Good luck for the future, CW9!".

Wilson's departure immediately vacates the coveted No 9 shirt and underscores Newcastle's need for a fresh face at centre-forward, as they currently appear thin on attacking options. While Wilson had remained silent on the affair thus far, today he spoke up about his decision to leave, reports Chronicle Live.

Despite Eddie Howe, the head coach, expressing his desire to retain Wilson after the season concluded, it appears both parties are headed in different directions. Howe said: "Well, let's wait and see. We're going to sit down and talk with his representatives."

He also praised Wilson's impact, stating: "What I can say is Callum Wilson is and has been just an incredible footballer for Newcastle, someone who epitomises the spirit that's got us to where we are."

Nevertheless, Wilson himself announced: "It's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon."

His farewell message included thanks and acknowledgment of their shared journey: "Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

"I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say. All good things come to an end but there's no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts. Thank you for the memories."
