Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has sent a message to Callum Wilson after it was confirmed he is leaving the club after five seasons.

It is a sad day on Tyneside as one of the club’s best-ever No.9s confirms that he has left the club upon the expiry of his contract.

Callum Wilson did not enjoy the best campaign with Newcastle United last season, but he will always be considered a legend on Tyneside for his efforts in years gone by.

The striker was a big part of the 2022/23 campaign, scoring 18 Premier League goals to lift Newcastle up to Champions League qualification after they were staring relegation in the face just over a year prior.

Wilson is linked with a move to Burnley, but there has been no word of his next destination as it stands. After speculation around his future, Wilson finally confirmed his Newcastle departure by posting an emotional message to social media.

With the 33-year-old now a free agent, Alan Shearer has sent an eight-word message to the now former Newcastle striker.

Although it took days for the announcement to come, it was always expected that Wilson was set to leave Newcastle.

It was confirmed that Newcastle did offer Wilson an incentive-based deal, but the England international has opted to explore free agency and search for a new club this summer.

Fans have flocked to social media to pay tribute to Wilson, who gave them hope during the dark times under Mike Ashley. Newcastle legend Shearer has also praised Wilson, saying: “Well done Callum and good luck going forward.”

Like Shearer, Wilson wore the No.9 shirt on Tyneside for several years. The striker originally wore the No.13 before agreeing to take the number from Joelinton.

While Shearer is Newcastle’s best-ever striker, he was never able to do something Wilson has with the club. Wilson played in the historic Carabao Cup final win against Liverpool, coming on late into the game to help the Magpies win their first trophy since 1969.

Although they made it to major finals, Newcastle were never able to win a trophy with Shearer at the club. Wilson will always have that one-up on the Magpies’ record goalscorer.
