Everton have agreed a “surprising” deal with star defender Jarrad Branthwaite after tying down his long-term future.

The 23-year-old came through the academy at Carlisle United before making the switch to Goodison Park in 2020 when he was just 17.

Branthwaite has been the subject of interest from Manchester United and other top clubs after impressing for the Toffees since breaking into the first team at the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

However, Branthwaite signed a new deal with Everton on 2 June that will keep him on Merseyside until 2030.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider it’s “great news” for David Moyes’s side the centre-back has committed his future to the club.

Branthwaite, who made his England debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June last year, has made 73 appearances for Everton over the past couple of campaigns.

Jarrad Branthwaite had interest from multiple top clubs

Borson insisted it’s “surprising” Branthwaite has made a long-term commitment to Everton following the interest from other clubs.

He told Football Insider: “I think it’s obviously very good news for them.

“I’m not totally sure if I was Branthwaite that I would have necessarily signed for five years right now.

“It depends who else was interested, but he seemed to have a lot of interest from some pretty high-profile situations, so it’s quite a commitment from him.

“Obviously, we don’t know whether he’s got exit clauses and things like that.

“But it’s not a case where Everton have shown so far in the window that they’ve got a huge budget for next season and they have lost a number of players.

“We know Calvert-Lewin is going for free, for example.

“I think at the moment, unless they start investing, I would say they’re going to have a tough season.

“It’s great news for Everton that Branthwaite has committed, but I would say it’s slightly surprising.”

Walker-Peters to Everton update emerges

In terms of a potential incoming, Football Insider revealed on 30 June Everton are interested in signing Kyle Walker-Peters, but they now face competition from West Ham and Besiktas.

In a blow to his suitors in England, Besiktas are believed to be ready to table a lucrative offer to the full-back, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a keen admirer of his.

The 28-year-old, who made 35 appearances for Southampton last season, left St Mary’s on a free transfer last week following the expiration of his contract.
