Wayne Rooney signs new£800k deal

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is set to grace our TV screens once again as he signs a new deal in his latest venture after hanging up his boots.

The 39-year-old retired from his playing days back in 2021, when he finished on the pitch for Derby County, having been their caretaker manager and then was handed the role on a permanent basis.

After a year and a half managing the club, Rooney moved back to America to manage former side D.C. United, however after a year in the States, returned to England in late 2023.

Since then the former striker has had two failed stints with Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, however has now stepped into the world of punditry.

Back in January, it was reported that Rooney was holding talks to join the Match of the Day team as a rotating pundit alongside Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman, and Kelly Cates.

However, the England legend instead went on to join Amazon Prime, supporting with coverage of the Champions League.

Now, Rooney is returning to the initial conversations, with The Sun reporting he’s signed a £800,000 deal to be a Match of the Day regular for the next two years.

It’s understood that after his warm reception as a guest, Rooney is set to be unveiled as the shows newest regular, having already signed up to the programme’s coverage of the 2026 World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada.

The report also explains that a potential two-year extension has also been build into the contract, seeing him in the Match of the Day chairs until 2029 if things go well.

As such, it seems Wayne Rooney is turning his back on his managerial career, instead accepting a life in front of the screen.
