Callum Wilson has confirmed his departure from Newcastle United.

After five years with the Magpies, the striker will be a free agent this summer after his contract expired at St James’ Park, ready to move on.

Leeds United have been linked with a bargain move for the forward in recent months, and could now approach the Englishman.

Wilson’s final season in black and white was riddled by injuries, with the 33-year-old performing a bit part role upon his return.

Wilson signed for Newcastle in 2020, after more than six years with Bournemouth.

The move coincided with the first rumblings of the Saudi Arabian-led takeover at St James’ Park, but the purchase wouldn’t be finalised until the following year.

And with it, Wilson would be reunited with his former manager Eddie Howe, who had originally brought the Coventry-born attacker to Bournemouth.

Injuries littered the striker’s first years in the North East, but his quality became apparent in the 2022/23 season, in which he would score 18 goals as Newcastle finished fourth and qualified for the Champions League.

In the years following, Wilson’s injuries returned, and the striker would gradually be resigned to the bench when fit, as star striker Alexander Isak continued to develop.

With his departure from Newcastle confirmed, the forward took to Instagram to share his thoughts.

“I am so proud to have worn the iconic number nine shirt and to have added a little more history to it,” he said.

Karl Darlow, who played with Wilson for three years at Newcastle before joining Leeds in 2023, shared his support in the comments.

Accompanied by a heart emoji, the goalkeeper said: “Some boy.”

Darlow has spent the vast majority of his time at Leeds sitting on the bench, but the 34-year-old replaced the out-of-favour Illan Meslier for the final seven matches of last season as the Whites won the Championship.

Wilson’s best days are behind him

Wilson was an undeniably solid Premier League striker in his day. His efforts that saw Newcastle return to the Champions League will undoubtedly be remembered on Tyneside for many years to come.

But the forward has unfortunately been ravaged by injuries, and for Leeds, would likely represent an all-too-expensive problem.
