Manchester United have granted further compassionate leave to Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes, following the passing of Diogo Jota.

Jota, 28, was killed in a road traffic collision in Spain on Thursday, alongside his younger brother Andre.

The accident happened on the A-52 in the province of Zamora, and news of the pair's tragic deaths sent shockwaves around the footballing world.

Both Dalot and Fernandes were international teammates of the former Liverpool star and could be seen attending his funeral on Saturday in Gondomar, Portugal.

The Sun has today reported how United have now granted Dalot and Fernandes additional compassionate leave, as they continue to come to terms with Jota's tragic death.

The pair were meant to report back for pre-season training at Carrington this week, but have each been handed an additional break period.

A source, as per The Sun, said: “Bruno and Diogo are heartbroken and in shock after attending the funeral.

“United’s players have rallied around them. They’ve been offered a week’s extended leave and counselling or support.

“The pair played with Jota for ten years in the national side and won the Nations League together only a few weeks ago.”

Fernandes took to Instagram on Thursday as he paid tribute to Jota, adding a heartfelt message the way of his fellow countryman.

“Friend, colleague, and companion in a thousand battles. It’s hard to understand how it’s possible for someone to leave so soon," began the United captain.

“May you and your brother find the peace you need to look after those who lost you so suddenly and so soon. My condolences to all your family.”

Dalot, who shared the pitch 21 times with Jota across his Portugal career, sent his wishes the way of Jota's family on social media too.

“Devastating... speechless... much strength to the family,” he wrote.
