FRISCO - Hey, what is the expiration date on this idea?
This offseason, the Dallas Cowboys made a controversial-to-some trade for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens. On paper? This can provide "America's Team'' with one of the best receiving duos in the NFL as the explosive Pickens happily teams with new "Goodfellas'' chum CeeDee Lamb.
Lamb is highly paid, at $34 million per year.
Pickens? It can be argued that he's high maintenance, something the Cowboys researched before pulling the trigger.
Is there another chair in this receivers room ... where in the NFL, divas often rule?
Also this offseason, the New England Patriots signed receiver Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million deal.
Lamb, 26, has been known to pout on the sideline, and he's admitted that. Pickens, 24, has also conceded that he needs to grow as a person.
And Diggs? At 31, he's still very much about on-field and sideline and off-the-field drama ... which makes it hilarious that Last Word On Sports thinks the Cowboys should trade for him.
"The Dallas Cowboys,'' they write, "could trade for Diggs to not only depend on CeeDee Lamb and Pickens in the deep threat route, while Dak Prescott slings it to the slot in a potential reliable receiver like Diggs."
This is ... gibberish - in so many ways. To wit ...
Lamb's best spot is in the slot. 2) Diggs is coming off a season in Houston during which he only appeared in eight games due to a knee injury. 3). His tumultuous nature is why he's no longer in Buffalo. 4) His contract has an escape hatch after this year, but New England has already handed him $16.6 million in guarantees and he'll count about $9 million against the cap.
One cute aspect of the idea? It would bring together Stefon and his brother Trevon, the Cowboys' big-game cornerback.
The two have talked openly about how fun it would be to partner up. But they haven't done so in years. And why? Frankly, Trevon is busy rehabbing, trying to get back on the field this year. And Stefon is busy trying to explain what he was doing with that baggie of pink pills on that yacht.
In another time and another place? Diggs and Diggs would be at least a sentimental notion. But now? Dallas has no room for Diggs after trading for Pickens. ... and neither Diggs has much room to talk about what their respective teams should do in terms of roster moves.
