Newcastle United's new Dominic Calvert-Lewin offer a week after transfer snub

The Magpies are currently in a position where agents are trying their luck at offering available free transfers

Newcastle United have been reoffered the chance to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The approach has come from Calvert-Lewin's representatives with the former Everton man looking for a new club. However, as Chronicle Live reported last week, Newcastle's initial stance on Calvert-Lewin was a polite 'no thank you'.

Agents, however, are fully aware that Newcastle are yet to get off the mark with new signings, having missed out on Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Bryan Mbeumo. The return of Calvert-Lewin's name is not a surprise, while Manchester United have also been linked with the ex-Sheffield United star.

The truth is that Calvert-Lewin was on Newcastle's shortlist last summer but United walked away from those talks. Back then Everton wanted to use Calvert-Lewin as part of a swap for Yankuba Minteh.

Could Calvert-Lewin end up being an option for the Magpies if they don't succeed with other targets? That is deemed a slight possibility at the moment but the England international is also looking for a lucrative deal too, while Newcastle are keeping to their wage structure.

Chronicle Live sources say that Newcastle have not engaged in any new talks for the striker. As Calvert-Lewin searches for his next employers, Newcastle have simply been asked once again if they might be interested.

It comes on a day when Newcastle announced that Callum Wilson was leaving St James' Park. But our information is that Wilson's exit has been known about inside the four walls at United for a few days.

There is no sense of panic, or a situation where Newcastle have realised Wilson does not want to stay and the club have looked for a replacement in terms of an experienced striker. Instead, the Magpies are carefully negotiating with their targets, such as James Trafford and Anthony Elanga, with other irons also in the fire.

On the striker front, Newcastle prefer a versatile forward who can play across the frontline, as Mbeumo and Pedro can, which will give them more options. Calvert-Lewin is more of a traditional No 9 and at 28, with a number of injury setbacks, is not seen as a long-term bet although his status as a free agent is an attraction.

Wilson's statement had read earlier: "It's time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon.

"Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.

"I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.

"All good things come to an end but there's no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts. Thank you for the memories."
