Dominic Calvert-Lewin in action for Everton in a pre-season friendly
Former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a surprise move to Manchester United
Manchester are being linked with a shock move for former striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The Reds' need for a new No.9 is yet to be reflected in their business so far. United have signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Diego Leon, - even though there is yet to be a breakthrough.
None of those players are seen as a striker. United's record of 44 league goals last term was comfortably their fewest in a generation and played a key role in their lowest top-flight finish since they were relegated in the 1970s.
. While he may have the Premier League experience the Reds are clearly looking for this summer - being released by Everton should put him out of any consideration at M16.
Injury woes and a dreadful campaign at Goodison Park, which saw him score just three goals, highlight his decline. He may only be 28 but already it looks like his best days are behind him.
In fairness to United, it's still relatively early in the summer window for panic. The Reds would have liked to have made more progress by now, with Ruben Amorim's first-team squad arriving for pre-season training on Monday.
PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) constraints need to be considered, particularly when no sales have been made. It is also sensible for the club not to chuck money at players, as they were often accused of in previous windows.
But Viktor Gyokeres' likely move to Arsenal has left United with even fewer options in a summer when good-quality strikers are at a premium. Other players linked, including Victor Osimhen and Hugo Ekitike, are likely to be expensive, and there is no guarantee they would be keen on a move to Old Trafford.
It's too early to panic and yet as the new season edges closer, anxiety will rise and pressure will only grow before a campaign where the Reds must get things right.
