When Rasmus Hojlund joined Manchester United for a whopping £72 million from Atalanta in 2023, it was meant to signal a new dawn for the Red Devils.

Despite his youth, the Danish striker was expected, at least on paper, to step into the huge shoes left by Cristiano Ronaldo and become the club’s new leading light — the player to fire them back to former glories.

Two years on, however, and as many had guessed, those shoes have proven simply too big to fill.

After a decent debut season with 17 goals in all competitions, the 22-year-old endured a tough 2024/25 campaign. While he managed 10 goals overall, just four came in the Premier League, and he developed a reputation for missing big chances and looking out of sync on the pitch.

His struggles have reportedly put Manchester United on the brink of cutting ties.

With strong interest reportedly coming from Serie A giants Inter Milan and Napoli, United appear open to a permanent sale — keen to recoup some of their initial hefty investment. Hojlund is said to be weighing his options.

Though no official bids have been made, sources say an offer could be on the horizon. Depending on the fee, United might sell — and Hojlund could be ready to move on to reignite his career elsewhere.

Now, however, there’s been a twist.

Hojlund Wants to Stay at Old Trafford

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Hojlund has changed his tune. The striker now wants to stay and fight for his place under manager Rúben Amorim, as well as win back the fans.

“Rasmus Højlund doesn’t want to leave Manchester United this summer, his desire is to stay,” Romano posted on X. “The only possibility for sale is in case United decide to advance in talks and proceed with his exit.”

Romano added that while Inter Milan remain interested, any potential deal is currently “on standby” due to the latest developments.

So, what’s next? Our best guess is that it depends heavily on United’s transfer business. While Hojlund hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, the club’s shortage of proven strikers is a real concern.

If United manage to sign a big-name forward like Viktor Gyökeres (though he now seems Arsenal-bound) or Victor Osimhen, Hojlund’s exit could be confirmed. If not, he looks set for at least one more season at the Theatre of Dreams.
