Unai Emery poised for Villarreal reunion after Aston Villa confirm European double-header

Unai Emery’s men will face Marseille at the Stade Velodrome on Saturday, August 9 before heading round the Mediterranean coast and over the border to face the manager’s former club Villarreal barely 24 hours later on Sunday, August 10.

The matches will complete the club’s preparations for the new campaign, which they kick-off at home to Newcastle the following weekend.

Villa play their first friendly in the more familiar surroundings of Walsall’s Bescot Stadium on Wednesday, July 16, while they also host Roma at the same venue on August 6, following an away match at Hansa Rostock and a three-match tour of the USA in late July.

The match at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica will be Emery’s first return to his old club since leaving for Villa in November, 2022.

Emery won the fourth Europa League title of his career with the club in 2021, before leading them to the semi-finals of the Champions League the following season.

Marseille, meanwhile, will play in this season’s Champions League after finishing runners-up behind Paris Saint-Germain in the French top flight.
