The Pittsburgh Steelers are desperate for a young franchise quarterback. But you sure wouldn't know it by the way they've treated their young signal callers.
Recently, Pittsburgh has run through quarterbacks like a Starbucks runs through fat-free oat milk.
Last season, general manager Omar Khan turned over his entire quarterback room and traded for former Chicago Bears No. 11 overall pick, Justin Fields. The 25-year-old went 4-2 as a starter with 1,106 yards and five touchdowns to just one interception, before losing the job to Russell Wilson.
Now, Fields plays in New York as the starter for the Jets. Did the team give up too soon on Fields?
The best example, however, is one of the Steelers' own, first-rounder, Kenny Pickett. Pickett was drafted No. 20 overall in 2022 and probably given up on too quickly.
And Steelers QB legend Terry Bradshaw agrees, as he noted on the To The Point Home Services Podcast
"Steelers getting rid of Kenny Pickett," Bradshaw said. "A first-rounder got rid of him after two years. And they're still looking for a quarterback. They didn't even do anything to build around him."
Pickett wasn't given much of a chance over two seasons in Pittsburgh.
He started 12 games in 2022 and posted a 7-5 record with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. That's not uncommon for a rookie quarterback.
In Year 2 he improved, also starting 12 games and posting another 7-5 record, but with six touchdowns and four interceptions for an offense that was clearly focusing on the ground game at the time.
Pickett never had a chance to find his footing in Pittsburgh. And for that, Bradshaw is correct. That's on the team.
