Although Diogo Jota’s life was tragically cut short in a devastating car accident, his legacy continues to shine brightly through the football academy that now bears his name in his hometown of Gondomar, Portugal.
Jota, born in Gondomar—the jewelry capital of Portugal—rose from humble beginnings to become a star at Liverpool. Alongside his brother André Silva, who also perished in the accident, Jota’s journey was one of relentless determination and talent.

Since June 30, 2022, the local football academy has been officially renamed “Academia Diogo Jota”, honoring his contributions to football and his hometown. The academy’s entrance proudly displays the motto, “It’s not about where we come from, but how far we go,”—a tribute to Jota’s remarkable path from unknown local talent to European football elite.
Alvaro Cerqueira, president of Gondomar SC and a longtime family friend, recalled how Jota was brought to the academy as a young boy. Despite transferring to larger clubs, Jota maintained close ties with Gondomar, frequently returning every summer to train—often alongside his brother André. Jota’s connection to the academy wasn’t just nostalgic; it was inspirational.
Young players watched him not only as a role model on the pitch but also as a symbol of humility and passion. In front of the “Academia Diogo Jota,” Gondomar SC has created a dedicated memorial area where fans can pay tribute. Surrounded by jerseys, hand-written letters, footballs, and portraits, the display encapsulates the soul of a player many consider “the greatest in the club’s history.”

He even competed professionally and founded LUNA Esports, a team that clinched victories in major tournaments such as the FIFA Championship, MLS, and the Copa del Mundo de Esports.
