Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes on advice he got from Tom Brady after Super Bowl loss

Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady was asked recently by comedian Kevin Hart who could one day challenge his legacy.

Brady said it was Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I just think Patrick — I love his mentality,” Brady said per Yahoo Sports. “The great players that I’ve played with, Patrick has their mentality. He has the will to win. He’s got a desire every time he takes the field to be a great leader. I listen to what guys say after they win, I listen to what guys say after they lose. Everything he says is the right thing.

“He’s got a great coach, great general manager, great ownership, and the parts around him.”

Mahomes was asked about Brady’s comments on Monday’s “Up & Adams” show. Part of the discussion was about Mahomes’ legacy as he approaches his 30th birthday.

“I think it’s always in the back of your mind, even from the beginning of my career, but at the end of the day, it’s about taking it a day (at a) time ... just continuing to do that,” Mahomes said. “And that’s something that I’ve been conscious of, of knowing that how blessed I am to be in Kansas City, to have all these great players around me.

“And having Tom, a guy like that say that, I mean, it just motivates me even more. And I’ve actually talked to Tom a good amount this offseason, and it’s cool that he wants to give me advice. You know, he didn’t have to be like that. He’s such a good dude, and I have so much respect for him, and I’ll take any advice he gives me.”

The Chiefs were thumped by the Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, so words of wisdom from Brady obviously are important to Mahomes.

Adams asked what Brady, who is now part of the Raiders’ ownership group, has said in those conversations.

“I’ve got to keep the secrets,” Mahomes quipped. “No, he always talks about being yourself. He thinks that — which I truly believe too — is that guys can spot when you’re not authentic and you’re not putting in the work. And that’s something that he did every single day.

“That’s why guys respected him so much. And that’s all I’m going to do for the rest of my career. And I feel like I’ve done so far as I’m always myself, no matter if you like me or if you don’t like me. You know that I’m giving everything I can to win the football games.”

Mahomes hears the haters

Since that loss to the Eagles, fans on social media as well as some sports talk hosts, have eagerly said the Chiefs’ dynasty is officially over.

Chiefs fans counter that Mahomes is ready to go on a revenge tour and win another Super Bowl.

Mahomes simply wants the season to begin.

“I‘m honestly just ready to play football again,” he said. “Whenever you lose you kind of have this taste in your mouth that you want to go out there and revenge that, or whatever you want to say.

“But at the same time, I feel like I’ve had to sit back and just listen to people talk and talk. And I’m like, let’s just play football and handle it all out there. And I don’t really want to talk about it. I just want to go out and show who we are as the Kansas City Chiefs.”
