There was a time when Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes and arguably the NFL's greatest of all time, Tom Brady, were fierce rivals. In fact, Brady and the New England Patriots took down Mahomes and the Chiefs in the 2019 AFC Championship during the 2018 season, and Brady and the Bucaneers in Super Bowl LV.
There are also conversations about who is the GOAT. Granted, Brady has seven Super Bowl titles to Mahomes' three, but the pair share a similar story and trajectory. Despite Mahomes only being in his ninth season, there are those who would consider him to be the greatest already, or at least very close to it.
Despite the back-and-forth about dominance, Brady has since retired from the game of football. Now, Mahomes is considered the best quarterback in the league, or one of them.
The Chiefs were taken down by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, but it's only a matter of time before Mahomes returns to the top of the AFC. Now, it appears the Chiefs' star might have a surprise mentor in his former rival.
Mahomes joined "The Kay Adams Show" to reveal he has talked to Brady a lot in the offseason.
Initially, host Kay Adams talks about how Brady stated that if anyone were to pass his accomplishments in the NFL, it would be Mahomes. Through his appreciation of the comments, Mahomes also reveals the sort of mentorship he has received from Brady this offseason.
"...Knowing how blessed I am to be in Kansas City and have all these great players around me. Having Tom, a guy like that say that, that just motivates me even more. I've actually talked to Tom a good amount this offseason, and it's cool that he wants to give me advice. He didn't have to be like that and he's such a good dude. I have so much respect for him, and I'll take any advice he gives me," Mahomes stated.
Adams tries to pry what kinds of advice Brady told Mahomes, but he coyly withholds the words he has shared with his former rival.
Mahomes is on a similar trajectory and could theoretically pass Brady with championships, but that will take some time. The Chiefs have appeared in five Super Bowls since Mahomes became a starter, winning three of those.
Kansas City remains the team to beat in the AFC, and a big reason for that is the skills of Mahomes. He continually finds ways to win, and could evolve even more given the advice he has received from Brady.
