Stephon Gilmore Makes His Thoughts Clear About Playing This Season

Not so long ago, Stephon Gilmore drew praise for being one of the best defensive backs in the National Football League.

Fast forward to today, and he might be yet another example of how ruthless this business can be.

The fact that he’s still a free agent at this point in the offseason is somewhat surprising, but he’s still not desperate.

In a recent appearance on “The Money Down” podcast, the former Defensive Player of the Year winner acknowledged that, while he still wants to play for a little longer, he’s still trying to find the right situation for himself:

> “I want to play this year, it’s just got to be the right situation,” Gilmore [said](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RD7MEtpLi_U&t=2514s). “It’s got to be the right situation for me. I’m not just gonna sign anywhere. … I still love the game. I still can contribute. It’s just got to be the right place.”

Gilmore has made his fair share of cash in his career, so it’s not like he needs to play.

He’s still working out and staying in shape because he loves the game and believes he can still be an impactful player on a winning team.

And judging by his tape and stats from last season, there’s no reason to feel otherwise.

While he wasn’t the same lockdown corner he was in his prime, he was still a serviceable contributor for the Minnesota Vikings and Brian Flores’ defensive juggernaut.

There’s not necessarily a surplus of experienced defensive backs who are still up for grabs and bring Gilmore’s leadership and skills to the table.

And if he’s willing to play at a discount just for the love of the game and to prove the doubters wrong, it’s hard to think he wouldn’t make most teams in the league better.
