Why NFL insider is optimistic Drake Maye will make jump in Year 2

Drake Maye showed a lot of promise in his rookie season as quarterback of the New England Patriots. And one NFL insider explained why he thinks a jump in Year 2 is coming.

“Everything is calm and collected. He looks composed,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on “SportsCenter.” "They feel like they have more around him now."

The Patriots had a busy offseason that included hiring Mike Vrabel as their new coach. He quickly went to work getting more weapons for Maye, including Stefon Diggs. And while the wide receiver is rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered last season, there is optimism he’ll be ready for Week 1.

They also drafted Kyle Williams, who impressed his teammates throughout OTAs. He’s an explosive play threat and is strong at beating man coverage.

“The Patriots have not had a 1,000-yard receiver since Julian Edelman in 2019,” Fowler said. “They’re hoping rookie Kyle Williams — he’s been really impressive, he’s hit it off with Maye — they’re hoping he can make a jump. Stefon Diggs, still coming back from that ACL, but he was a positive influence this spring for sure.”

Despite a 4-13 season, Maye showed improvement and growth week in and week out. Now with a new-look roster that includes receiving help and protection help after New England drafted Will Campbell earlier this year, all signs point to Maye taking a big step in his sophomore season.
