Gyokeres to Arsenal transfer announcement could hint at next deal

Viktor Gyokeres looks set to finally become the striker Arsenal have been needing to sign for years.

The Gunners have made their move to sign the Swede from Sporting CP, advancing talks with the Portuguese side over a £70million deal.

Negotiations over how that £70million will be paid are ongoing, however, but it looks as though Arsenal have made their choice when it comes to their striker signing this summer.

football.london understands that Arsenal have had an interest in Gyokeres since before the 2024 summer transfer window, when links with the Swede first emerged.

A striker was seen as the number one priority during this summer transfer window, given Arsenal had to play with Mikel Merino up front for large parts of the second half of the season due to injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

More transfers at the Emirates Stadium could be completed before and after Gyokeres signs, with a midfielder, defender and winger also wanted by Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta to really strengthen the squad for an assault on the Premier League title in 2025/26.

But Gyokeres' signing and subsequent announcement could give an indication of one transfer that could be completed in an outgoing capacity.

Gyokeres has worn the No.9 shirt at Sporting for the past three seasons and, as the big striker signing, would naturally like to wear that shirt in north London.

He cannot, at this time however, claim that shirt, as it is currently worn by Jesus. The Brazilian was linked with an exit from Arsenal last summer, but remained part of Arteta's squad in the end.

He played a bit-part role in the first half of last season before scoring three goals in three games around the mid-point of the season, before his season was ended by an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

With Gyokeres coming in, Jesus may well be linked with an exit again during the latter stages of this summer transfer window and if Gyokeres comes in and is given the No.9 shirt straight away it could point to the Brazilian departing sooner rather than later.
