Packers Linked to Late-Offseason Move for 58-Sack Pass Rusher

The Green Bay Packers have had a relatively quiet NFL offseason thus far. Early on in NFL free agency, the team signed both Aaron Banks and Nate Hobbs. They also brought in wide receiver Mecole Hartman.

In the draft, Brian Gutekunst brought in a great class of young players. However, there are still question marks that could be addressed on the roster.

One of those question marks happens to come off of the edge defensive. Adding more pass rushing talent would be a wise decision for the Packers.

Looking at the market, there are a few intriguing names that Green Bay could target. There is one name in particular that has now been linked as a possible fit for the Packers.

Bleacher Report analyst Matt Holder has named Green Bay as one of the top potential fits for veteran free agent pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

"Lukas Van Ness hasn't lived up to his pre-draft billing so far, yet he's scheduled to be the Packers' starting defensive end opposite Rashan Gary this season," Holder wrote. "It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Packers to add Clowney to create competition for Van Ness during training camp."

Clowney would be a very interesting pickup for the Packers. He was the No. 1 overall pick back in the 2014 NFL Draft and has shown flashes of being the kind of player he was hyped up to be.

While the flashes of superstar ability have been there, Clowney has not been able to figure things out from a consistency perspective.

During the 2024 NFL season with the Carolina Panthers, the 32-year-old defensive end played in 14 games. He racked up 46 total tackles to go along with 5.5 sacks and four defended passes.

Throughout his entire 140-game NFL career, Clowney has totaled 409 tackles, 58 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, an interception, a defensive touchdown, and 32 defended passes.

It's possible that Clowney could be the missing piece for the Green Bay defense. He might also be the disruptor that the Packers needed off of the edge.

Depending on the price tag, Green Bay should look into the option. There are other names to keep an eye on as well, including Von Miller, Matthew Judon, Preston Smith, and DeMarcus Walker.

Gutekunst may choose to head into the season with the current roster intact. But, if he's interested in adding another edge rusher, Clowney could be worth taking a flier on.
