Manchester United have been hit by a £20million sponsorship blow after a “surprising” twist has emerged at Old Trafford.

The Premier League side agreed a multi-year deal for their training kit with Tezos in 2022.

However, the agreement with the blockchain platform expired at the end of June, leaving Man United without a sponsor for the 2025-26 season.

The Manchester giants launched their training kit on 1 July without a new sponsor, creating a significant hole in their accounts for the upcoming campaign.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider there is currently a “problem” with sponsorship deals in the Premier League.

Marriott International – the world’s largest hotel company – has also decided not to extend its sponsorship deal with United after it expired at the end of June.

Borson previously told Football Insider Marriott’s deal is likely to have been worth £7million a year.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are still without a front-of-shirt deal for next season, having played the majority of the 2024-25 campaign without a primary shirt sponsor.

United posted a club-record revenue of £661.8million in 2023-24, with their commercial income making up £302.9million of that figure.

Premier League facing sponsor ‘issue’ after Man United twist

Borson insisted the Tezos deal would have been worth between £15-20million a year for United.

He told Football Insider: “We have been talking about this for months now.

“There is a problem in football sponsorship right now that is not getting a lot of coverage, but there is a problem. United are just flagging another issue.

“This is a £20million-a-year United sponsorship contract, maybe a little bit less, maybe £18million. We know that together with TeamViewer in 2023, that was worth £66million.

“So, Tezos plus TeamViewer was £66million and in 2024, it was worth £60million together. We think that the TeamViewer was about £45million, so you’re talking about £15-20million for the other piece.

“But to get nothing so far and to actually launch the kit, Manchester United traditionally have been unbelievably good at having the replacement sponsor in line on the kit ready to go, sequential deals when a deal expires, often with actually an uplift.

“Well, this time they’ve got nobody, so it just goes on the list of sponsor deals that have been surprising.”

Man United turn attention to Aston Villa star

In terms of a potential incoming at Old Trafford, Football Insider revealed on 4 July Ollie Watkins’s potential move to United hinges on the future of Rasmus Hojlund.

Watkins has emerged as a transfer target for Ruben Amorim’s side as they look to strengthen their attacking options this summer.

The 29-year-old registered 17 goals and 14 assists in 54 appearances for Aston Villa in the 2024-25 season.
