Manchester United defender Sonny Aljofree is set to depart the Premier League giants on loan, with a deal to move to Notts County gaining traction.
The 20-year-old experienced time out on loan in the EFL last season, but with a pathway to the first team still uncertain at this stage – he has been given the green light to depart Old Trafford on another temporary stint.
He becomes the latest figure at the Premier League side to become increasingly likely to depart during the ongoing summer transfer window.
Manchester United man set for exit
As reported by journalist Dan Marsh, League Two side Notts County have entered negotiations to sign Manchester United youth defender Sonny Aljofree on a loan stint for the duration of the 2025/26 campaign.
He spent last season on loan in the fourth tier with Accrington Stanley and helped them to narrowly avoid relegation out of the EFL, but is now set to move onto a new chapter in his career.
Aljofree is under contract at Manchester United until June 2027, ruling out the possibility of a permanent deal due to the financial package involved in the deal at this stage.
How did he fare last season?
After joining Accrington Stanley on loan in August, it took almost two months for the defender to register his first appearance for the club, which came during a victory against Morecambe in October.
His first goal came a month later, when he scored the first equaliser during Accrington’s 2-2 draw against Swindon Town and continued to feature around the starting eleven all season.
In total, the 20-year-old made 26 appearances across all competitions for Accrington Stanley last season and scored three goals.
Is this the right move for Aljofree?
Looking at the fact he only featured for just over half a season in terms of appearances and the fact Accrington finished towards the bottom end of the table, Manchester United have made the correct decision here.
They will want Aljofree to develop and play, but he’s unlikely to get as many minutes in League One – which is why a League Two loan is perfect.
Notts County on paper are one of the biggest clubs in the division and came very close to promotion last season, with the move still being an upgrade even despite it being in the same division.
