Welling United Preview

**After Saturday’s encouraging start to pre-season with a 3-2 win at Margate, Craig Nelson will lead Tonbridge Angels for the first time at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium when they take on Welling United on Tuesday, with a 7.45pm kick off.**

Our erstwhile National League South counterparts come to Longmead under the new guidance of Lee Martin, who will be taking his first steps into management after a 20 year playing career that spanned a single appearance for Manchester United in 2005 before ending at Ramsgate, where he was part of their Isthmian League South East championship winning side.

Martin has set about the task of extensively reshaping the Welling squad who will play their first season outside of the top two tiers for 22 years. He has brought to the club Greg Cundle, Luke O’Neill and Jack Paxman, all of whom were former teammates at Ebbsfleet United. Slavomir Huk, well known to Angels supporters from his time as the Dorking Wanderers goalkeeper, has arrived from Burgess Hill Town and Jack West-Astuti ( Aveley) will provide the competition.

Lekan Majoyegbe (Sheppey United), Dan Vaughan (Glebe), Scott Simmons (Whitehawk); Eric Wilhelm from German club TSV Havelse following a brief spell at Broadbridge Heath and Keegan Bloom from Harrow Borough are the new additions to the defensive area. Into midfield, alongside Paxman, who has been made club captain, come Jack Leahy from Cray Wanderers, who is joined by his brother Tom, a forward from Millwall. Lee Lewis from Merstham; James Dyer (Erith Town) and Gil Carvalho from Sittingbourne. And, finally, in this extensive list, forwards Henry Sinai has arrived from Sittingbourne; John Ufuah (Chatham Town) and Ruben Shakpoke from Maidstone United.

Craig Nelson indicated in his post-match interview that his trialists from Saturday would continue to be involved and commented on Tuesday’s task: _“We treat the game in much the same way, these games are quite early in terms of we are trying to settle a new side, everything is brand new, the way we are asking them to play. We could do with more time on the training ground  but also getting them game time, emulating and showing them what it looks like is important, as is the feeling of winning games of football.”_
