Surprise entry in race to land Hammers ‘wantaway’ star

No sooner the article concerning [West Ham’s](https://www.claretandhugh.info/west-ham-transfers-the-devils-in-the-detail-on-aguerd-second-offer/) want-away defender was written today, than another report cropped up claiming interest in taking him on a completely different trajectory. Such is the nature of the summer transfer window as clubs jockey to spend billions to try and get a tune out of players which other clubs are happy to sell on.

According to _[footmercato.net](https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2025/sunderland-join-marseille-and-milan-in-the-race-to-sign-west-ham-centre-back-nayef-aguerd/):_

_“Sunderland enters the scene for Aguerd, Olympic Marseille remains in the running”._

Whether either club will be able to afford Aguerd’s reported £55k a week salary is not clear at this stage: However compared with the situation at the end of last week when there seemed NO club interested in taking the Moroccan away from London Stadium, things look a bit more rosy on the Hammers’ ‘_sell before buying_‘ whiteboard tonight.

The wisdom of selling players to your likely competitors does seem to have passed West Ham by: I suppose if the club can countenance selling Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham then Aguerd heading off to Sunderland is nothing.

The Moroccan will sure notice the difference though having spent last season on loan in Spain: I hear the climate in Sunderland is a little warmer than ‘bracing’ these days but probably a good 20 degrees down on Aguerd’s Spanish home for the last 12 months. He might yet regret being so set on leaving East London.
