Star Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback has ‘concerning’ knee issue, insider says

There is concern about an issue with one of Darius Slay’s knees, according to NFL insider Adam Caplan. The new Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback had an excellent 2024 season, but suffered a knee injury in 2023 that required arthroscopic surgery.

Caplan revealed that he was told that the knee is a concern for Slay, and he questions just how well he can now run at this point in his career.

“As I’m told, one of his knees is a concern. He actually had arthroscopic surgery on it in late 2023,” Caplan said on FOX Sports Radio. “He’s got great length, and he was super fast coming out of Mississippi State. But you have to wonder how well he can run... you never know when a guy is going to lose it, and they could lose it in an instant. The Steelers know this.”

The Steelers signed Slay to a one-year, $10 million deal that is fully guaranteed. He is expected to start on the outside, with Jalen Ramsey manning the slot and Joey Porter Jr. on the other side.

Two years ago, the Steelers tried to recruit Slay.

“Mike Tomlin, one of the best coaches in the NFL, man,” Slay said on his podcast, Big Play Slay. “What’s so crazy is I almost was going to them, too. They hit me up, too. T.J. Watt text me, Cam Heyward text me, and they talked about me coming there. Before I ever got to make a decision, they signed Pat Pete, so they kind of chilled out for a minute. But I was almost a Pittsburgh Steeler as well.”

Slay has one, maybe two years left in him at 34 years old. The Steelers, after their immediate moves on Sunday and Monday, seem to believe they are in a win-now mode and are going all-in.
