How ex-Celtics key reserve connected his new No. 7 to Spurs legend Tim Duncan

Luke Kornet has been known to have a sense of humor. And that carried over from Boston to San Antonio.

Kornet was asked why he chose to wear No. 7 with the Spurs, to which he said he “hoped to be a third of the player Tim Duncan was,” via Spurs reporter Matthew Tynan.

Duncan, who spent his entire 19-year career with the Spurs, wore No. 21.

Kornet added he also loves “multiples and factors,” which checks out given 21 is a multiple of seven.

The former Celtics key reserve player spoke to the media for the first time on Monday as a member of the Spurs after signing a four-year deal, $41 million with San Antonio in free agency.

This is Kornet’s first big-time deal in the NBA. And while he turned down more money to sign with the Celtics last summer, Kornet couldn’t pass up another opportunity for a pay raise.

The 29-year-old had a breakout season with the Celtics in 2024-25 which earned him consistent minutes throughout the playoffs. Kornet averaged 6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 73 games for Boston last year.
