It's not a secret that the Kansas City Chiefs' wide receivers have caused turmoil for the offense over the last two seasons, with ineffectiveness and injuries plaguing the position group.
General manager Brett Veach had a clear mission to transform the room, and the Chiefs now sit in a comfortable spot with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Jalen Royals.
With training camp right around the corner, though, it'd still be wise to extend invites to players who could make the back end of the roster or even the practice squad. One former second-round pick is attempting a comeback after a year out of the NFL, and he's the exact kind of guy who Veach typically targets with a dart throw.
Chiefs Should Invite WR Chase Claypool to Training Camp Amid NFL Comeback
Veteran WR Chase Claypool originally signed to play with the Buffalo Bills in 2024, though he was released due to injury before the start of the season. He took to social media in new comments over the holiday weekend, declaring that he's ready for another opportunity.
"I am back to being the strongest and fastest I’ve ever been and couldn’t be more excited to step back out on the field and let my actions speak for themselves," Claypool wrote on Instagram. "I deeply and truly believe that the pieces will align, and I will work my way into the position to show off what’s been suppressed these last two years."

It's been an adventure for Claypool so far in his brief career. In his first two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he amassed over 1700 receiving yards while scoring 11 TDs. It looked like Claypool would be the next great Pittsburgh wideout, though behavioral and effort issues led to a trade to the Chicago Bears. Claypool was last on the field for the Miami Dolphins, though he hasn't been an impactful NFL player since 2021.
He's only 27 years old, so it's reasonable to think the ex-Notre Dame star could still salvage his career. At the very least, it's worth seeing if he has some juice left. Odds are low that he'd beat out Skyy Moore, Nikko Remigio, Justyn Ross, or Tyquan Thornton for a roster spot, but as Chiefs fans know, injuries happen, and it's always wise to have depth at a key position.
Should Claypool impress the coaching staff, he could win a practice squad gig and develop within the system to try to make the team down the road. It's a low-risk, high-upside move and the type of acquisition that Veach has done repeatedly with the organization.
