The Sacramento Kings will hold a press conference to introduce veteran point guard Dennis Schroder on Tuesday at Golden 1 Center after finalizing a trade with the Detroit Pistons.
The Kings formally announced the sign-and-trade deal Monday following weeks of speculation. The Kings gave up very little, and possibly nothing, sending a top 55 protected 2026 second-round draft pick to the Pistons in exchange for Schroder and the lowest of Detroit’s three second-round picks in 2029.
A league source told The Sacramento Bee the Kings are acquiring Schroder using part of the $16.8 million trade exception from the Kevin Huerter trade. The Pistons created a $14.3 million trade exception as part of the deal.
Schroder, 31, will likely take over as Sacramento’s starting point guard after the Kings traded De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in February. He will join a lineup that features Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis unless the Kings make additional changes.
Schroder is a 12-year NBA veteran who will be playing for his 10th team. He was traded twice last season, going from the Brooklyn Nets to the Golden State Warriors before finishing the season with the Pistons.
Schroder averaged 13.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 0.9 steals over 75 games for the Nets, Warriors and Pistons last season, shooting 40.6% from the field and 34.2% from 3-point range. Schroder’s numbers tailed off after a strong start in Brooklyn, where he averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists while shooting 38.7% from long distance over the first 23 games.
