A look at how Arsenal’s squad is shaping up after some early summer business.
Here we take a look at the current Gunners depth chart, with the first name in each position the current most likely starter and the last the least likely. Take a look below.
Goalkeepers
David Raya, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Karl Hein
Raya is Arsenal’s clear number one, while Kepa Arrizabalaga has been signed on the cheap from Chelsea to be the new number two after Beto returned to Bournemouth. Hein is currently in the number three spot.
Left-back
Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Oleksandr Zinchenko
At left-back, Calafiori is in a tight battle with Lewis-Skelly, but the Italian might just hold the edge. Zinchenko has struggled for game time of late and likely finds himself in need of a new club this summer if he wants to play regularly.
Centre-back
Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Jakub Kiwior
Arsenal only have three out-and-out centre-backs, but it’s worth noting that Calafiori, Ben White and Jurrien Timber can also deputise here. The Gunners are also looking to add another centre-back with Kiwior potentially looking for a move away. Gabriel and Saliba are the current first choice centre-backs and that is not likely to change.
Right-back
Ben White, Jurrien Timber,
White currently leads the race to start at right-back, but Jurrien Timber will also see plenty of action, also able to play at centre and left-back if needed.
Centre-midfield
Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Albert Sambi-Lokonga
In the holding midfield roles, Rice is a clear starter, and then it will be between new signing Zubimendi and Merino for the other spot. Zubimendi likely had the edge in the more defensive role, while Sami-Lokonga is likely to move on.
Attacking midfield
Martin Odegaard, Fabio Vieira
In terms of the attacking midfield role, Odegaard is an obvious starter, and it’s unclear what Vieira’s future holds after his latest loan spell. Arsenal could sign another player who can play here, with the likes of Eberechi Eze linked, while Merino can certainly operate in this role.
Left wing
Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard
On the left, Martinelli and Trossard will compete for a starting spot, but the Brazilian is the starter until Arsenal find themselves a new wideman. They are going to want competition for Martinelli this summer.
Right wing
Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, Reiss Nelson
On the other side, Saka is the clear starter, but the versatile Nwaneri will compete for a role, also likely to feature on the other side. Nelson is likely to move on after a spell on loan with Fulham. Havertz could also play here if a new striker is signed.
Centre-forward
Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus
Havertz is the current striker starter after returning from injury, while Jesus is out until the end of the calendar year with his knee injury. Arsenal are likely to sign a new starter here.
