Wolves are battling Blackburn and Burnley to sign a highly-rated EFL striker.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly battling with two other English clubs to sign a prolific young striker.
The Old Gold, eager to add to their youth ranks by signing several talented teenagers this summer, are getting on with their business and Devine Samuel, who recently left Leyton Orient upon the expiry of his contract, is on their shortlist.
Fresh off the back of 20 goals and six assists Leyton Orient’s under-18 side last season, as well as 10 goals in seven games on loan at Harrow Borough, Samuel is looking for a new club. The 18-year-old had the chance to stay with Orient but he decided he fancied pastures new and rejected the offer of a new deal.
Football Insider now reports Wolves are one of three teams making moves to sign Samuel for free, alongside fellow Premier League side Burnley and Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers. It awaits to be seen which club Samuel would prefer to go to, but Wanderers could have the edge given their higher standing in the English pyramid.
How would Devine Samuel fit in at Wolves?
Although he’s a talent with big potential and Wolves are lacking depth in attack, it’s highly unlikely Samuel would break into the senior squad immediately if he were to make the move to Molineux. That said, Pereira is great at developing young players and he’s set to give Mateus Mane a chance in the first team next season, so what’s to say Samuel couldn’t follow suit?
The more likely scenario is, admittedly, working with the academy squad instead before eventually making a breakthrough. An alternative could be to loan Samuel out to a team in League One or League Two, perhaps, to expose him to senior football and make it a little less of a jump to Premier League level.
Vitor Pereira eyeing big-money moves for Wolves first team
Onto the senior incoming business at Molineux, and Wolves can spend big in the next couple of months if they wish to following the sales of Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester United and Manchester City. Wanderers have already completed the £21 million acquisition of promising winger Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo, while the Jorgen Strand Larsen deal has been made permanent for £25 million, but plenty of other swoops are expected.
It’s understood that Pereira is prioritising signing a new centre-back or two as he seeks to bolster the depth and quality in defence. As Pereira tends to play with a back three, it’s pivotal that he’s got a wealth of options at his disposal in case of injuries and fatigue.
Wanderers are also eager to sign a striker as there’s a recognition that Strand Larsen can’t do it all on his own. Wolves’ lack of depth up top was laid bare towards the end of last season when Strand Larsen wasn’t at full fitness, so it’s a big priority to get another centre-forward through the doors at Molineux.
