Forget Diaz: Bayern must beat Chelsea to sign dazzling £51m attacker – opinion

Bayern Munich have been looking to sign a new left-winger this summer, and they have been linked with a host of players already.

Nico Williams emerged as a dream target for Bayern, but the Spaniard chose to continue his stay with Athletic Bilbao.

The German champions have also struggled to lure the likes of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, while AC Milan’s Rafael Leao is no longer an option for them.

Bayern Munich have now switched their attention to signing Liverpool winger Luis Diaz instead. They have been linked with Diaz’s club teammate Cody Gakpo, but it appears that the Dutchman has dropped down in the priority list.

Should Bayern ditch the idea of signing Luis Diaz?

Diaz is a terrific winger known for his flair and dribbling abilities. He has scored 41 goals for Liverpool since joining the club in the January window of 2022.

The Colombian scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Reds last season, and Liverpool are expected to demand a high transfer fee for the winger, who has a contract at Anfield until 2027.

Díaz has informed Bayern that he would be willing to leave Liverpool and move to the Bundesliga, which should come as encouraging news for the Bavarian club. Although Barcelona are interested, doubts remain whether they could meet Liverpool’s asking price for the versatile winger.

But do Bayern really need Diaz?

Bayern need to sign a left-sided forward after Leroy Sane left the club to join Galatasaray.

Although Kingsley Coman looks more likely to stay, Bayern could be tempted to do business if they receive a good offer from Saudi Pro League clubs.

Serge Gnabry has entered the final 12 months of his contract, which means the club need new faces in this department.

Bayern have enough experience on the side, and it would make a lot of sense for them to invest in young talents who have tremendous potential. Diaz will turn 29 next January, and surely he cannot be a long-term solution for the club.

Bayern must bid for Chelsea target Malick Fofana

Vincent Kompany should look at the bigger picture, and Bayern must get serious about landing Lyon’s rising star Malick Fofana, who is also wanted by Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this month that Bayern Munich and Napoli have made an initial approach to sign the 20-year-old attacker, and it is high time they make a concrete effort to bring him to Germany.

He is valued at around £51.5m, but Bayern can negotiate to lower the amount. Maybe they can offer one or two players as part of the deal to secure his signature.

Fofana possesses a menacing pace, impressive dribbling skills, and can score with both feet. He is versatile and has fantastic positional awareness.

Chelsea need to offload some of their unwanted players like Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke, and Joao Felix to make room for new additions.

Fofana would be a tremendous signing for any club, given his exceptional talent, and Bayern must prioritise investing in youth rather than spending big money on Diaz. The club must show long-term vision rather than taking the easy route.
