Notts County keen on loan deal for Manchester United prospect

Notts County are in talks over a loan move for Manchester United defender Sonny Aljofree, according to reports by Dan Marsh.

Notts County will be looking to bounce back next campaign after losing in the League Two play-off semi-finals last season.

The Magpies hired Martin Paterson as the new head coach at Meadow Lane after Stuart Maynard was sacked following the defeat to AFC Wimbledon in the play-offs.

Paterson has a huge task ahead to mount a new promotion push and challenge for a place in League One. He has made six signings so far this window and must add more to his squad before August.

Notts County recently lost defender Robbie Cundy to fellow League Two side Cheltenham Town, and the Magpies should look to reinforce their defensive ranks. One player that could be arriving at Meadow Lane is Manchester United prospect Sonny Aljofree.

Dan Marsh of Mirror Football has reported that Notts County are in talks to sign the ‘highly-rated’ defender on a loan deal. The 20-year-old spent last campaign on loan at Accrington Stanley.

How was Aljofree’s first season of senior football?

The youngster did well, all things considered, in his first loan spell at senior level. The 20-year-old scored three goals in 25 games for Accrington Stanley. The League Two outfit struggled last season, though, and finished 21st in the table.

Aljofree has continued to rise through the ranks at Manchester United and captained the U21s twice before going out on loan last term.

The Notts County target is one to watch next campaign, and if his loan spell is successful again, the defender could find himself amongst the first-team in a couple of seasons.

A tough first job for Paterson

Paterson had a brief spell in charge of Burton Albion in the second half of the 2023/24 season, helping the Brewers avoid relegation from League One.

The 38-year-old has been an assistant head coach five times in his coaching career so far, and this will be his first real attempt at managing a team of his own at Notts County.

It won’t be an easy job for the former Northern Ireland international, but he has gained valuable experience as a number two to help him flourish as head coach of a League Two outfit.
