Leeds United have stepped up their transfer activity this week as preparations continue for their Premier League return.
Lille left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson is on the verge of completing a move to Elland Road. Reports in France suggest the Sweden international has agreed a four-year contract.
Gudmundsson flew into the United Kingdom over the weekend to undergo a medical. It is believed the Whites will pay the French club around £10m for the 26-year-old.
Gudmundsson joined Lille from Dutch outfit FC Groningen in the summer of 2021. The full-back, renowned for his attacking prowess, has been a first team regular for Lille, making over 130 Ligue 1 appearances. He has also featured regularly in the Champions League last year under then-coach Paulo Fonseca and later Bruno Génésio.
With Junior Firpo leaving the club last week, it was imperative United signed a new left-back. Signing Gudmundsson on a four-year deal is a big statement of intent from the Premier League new boys. He looks set to become their fourth summer signing, following on from Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw.
Midfield targets
It emerged overnight that the Whites have lodged a bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff. United have held a long-standing interest in the player. It has been suggested Daniel Farke's men have tabled an offer understood to be worth £12million including add-ons.
Longstaff has fallen down in the pecking order at St James' Park. His last Premier League start came in December after a nine-match winning run after that saw Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton firmly establish themselves as Eddie Howe's undisputed midfield three.
Longstaff, a graduate of Newcastle's youth system, is out of contract next summer. He is reportedly keen on a move as he seeks regular first team football. The 27-year-old has made over 200 senior appearances for the Magpies, scoring 16 goals.
Despite making a move for Longstaff, the Whites also remain interested Hoffenheim star Anton Stack. Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports United have "made contact" to sign the defensive midfielder. No official bid has been submitted but Plettenberg claims a deal for Stach is “possible”. Stach still has two years left to run on his Hoffenheim deal.
