Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has shared an encouraging update on his ongoing recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

The Argentine centre-back has been absent since February after suffering the aforementioned injury blow in United's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The 27-year-old was stretchered off with 82 minutes on the clock and was crying as he left the pitch.

The 27-year-old underwent a successful operation the following week and has since been working hard on his recovery. ACL injuries can typically take at least six months to recover from.

The defender, who joined United from Ajax three years ago, has been putting in the hard yards to boost his chances of making a comeback as quickly as possible. However, United are yet to confirm a potential return date.

Nevertheless, Martinez's latest update, which he shared on social media on Monday evening, was of a positive nature, writing on Instagram: "The comeback is getting closer."

Martinez's five-word post accompanied a video of him working on his physical strength in a gym. He was also donning United training wear.

The Argentine has struggled with injuries in the last couple of years, limiting him to just 46 appearances for United since the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign. In comparison, he made 45 appearances in his first season at the club in 2022/23.

Prior to suffering his ACL injury against Palace earlier this year, Martinez was just beginning to show signs he was getting to grips with the demands of head coach Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system.

As a ball-carrying centre-back, Martinez can help United progress the ball from deep areas of the pitch. Furthermore, the fact he is also left footed gives United an extra dimension.
