Aston Villa captain John McGinn has attracted interest from Premier League rivals Everton this summer transfer window, according to reports.

McGinn has been at Villa since the summer of 2018 when he joined under Steve Bruce from Hibernian. Since then, he has helped the club win promotion to the Premier League - scoring in the 2-1 play-off final win over Derby County - and establish themselves as a top flight side again.

In more recent seasons McGinn has been handed the captaincy by former boss Steven Gerrard and remained a crucial component of the side under Unai Emery, as they've lifted themselves into three years of European football.

McGinn, who turns 31 in October, has played 285 times for Villa and made 70 goal contributions in that period. He last signed a new deal in 2023 which runs for a couple more years.

The Athletic report that Everton boss David Moyes is eager to bring his compatriot to Merseyside, as they prepare for their first campaign in their new stadium and life after Goodison Park.

The Toffees have signed up former Villan Idrissa Gueye to a new one-year contract, but they have bid farewell to the out of contract Abdoulaye Doucoure and also to loanee Orel Mangala. They've also said goodbye to Ashley Young, and Moyes is keen on bringing in some more experience and leadership.

Villa, it's understood, are keen to keep McGinn at the club ahead of another campaign in Europe; they've got Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara, Ross Barkley and Youri Tielemans, as well as Jacob Ramsey, currently also in the midfield department, with Enzo Barrenechea and Leander Dendoncker returning from various loan spells.
