Ollie Watkins could cost Manchester United up to £100million as he would demand £200,000-a-week wages at Old Trafford.

The England international has now emerged as a transfer target for Ruben Amorim’s side as they look to strengthen their attacking options this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 4 July Watkins’s potential move to Man United hinges on the future of Rasmus Hojlund.

The Denmark international has registered just 26 goals and six assists in 95 appearances since arriving at Old Trafford in a £72million deal from Atalanta in 2023.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider United would have to pay Aston Villa a £50million transfer fee and hand Watkins a five-year deal to secure his signature this summer.

The 29-year-old, who is under contract at Villa Park until June 2028, was the subject of a £40million bid from Arsenal in the January transfer window.

Ollie Watkins could agree £50m Man United deal

Borson insisted Watkins would demand a £200,000-a-week deal to join United, taking the overall worth of any potential transfer to £100million.

He told Football Insider: “I think a lot of what United are lining up is dependent on players leaving.

“Actually, Hojlund in many regards is not one of the players that I’ve sort of had at the fore of my mind for what their challenges are.

“It does look like there’s a little bit of interest maybe in Hojlund, but at what financial level? If it’s a loan deal, then does that really help them?

“But let’s say they get rid of a whole load of players and then look at Ollie Watkins. Now, Ollie Watkins is a player that’s 29 and 30 in December.

“I would be quite amazed if Manchester United after everything that they’ve talked about, every sort of bit of briefing that they’ve given, if they then said what we’re going to do now is we’re going to bring in a 29-year-old player this season and put him on a five-year contract because that’s what it’s going to be.

“Ollie Watkins is not moving to United for less than £200,000 a week, so we’re going to have a £10million contract. We have to pay a £50million transfer fee and he’s 29.

“I don’t know, football is crazy. It’s not impossible, and they definitely obviously have shown some interest.

“But it’s pretty amazing that they’d do a £100million deal on Ollie Watkins after everything they’ve just been through with other failed signings.”

Ivan Toney to Man United update emerges

Former Old Trafford chief scout Mick Brown told Football insider United are considering a “surprise” move for Ivan Toney given his Premier League experience and goalscoring prowess.

The England international joined Al-Ahli from Brentford in a £40million deal last summer.

The 29-year-old remains highly rated after registering 30 goals and six assists for the Saudi Pro League side in the 2024-25 season.
