Newcastle tell ‘unplayable’ player to drop his wages if he wants to move to St James’ Park -…

Newcastle United are interested in Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a potential replacement for Callum Wilson but will make a move on only one condition.

Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle have held talks with Calvert-Lewin, who has left Everton on a free transfer.

Calvert-Lewin has long been linked with a move to Newcastle United and a space in the squad has opened up following Wilson’s exit from the club on Monday.

Indeed, Wilson has left Newcastle upon the expiration of his contract despite talks over an incentivised deal.

As a result, Eddie Howe will need an alternative to Alexander Isak. William Osula is an option already within the Newcastle United squad, but Wilson’s departure means they are already lighter than last season.

Calvert-Lewin has been hailed as “unplayable” at his best by pundit Tony Cascarino in The Times and would arrive at St James’ Park with some decent pedigree.

Still, Newcastle are not prepared to break the bank.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s salary demands too high for Newcastle United

According to journalist Ben Jacobs on social media platform X, Newcastle do not want to meet the striker’s salary demands.

Newcastle almost signed Calvert-Lewin in 2024 and want the 11-cap England international to reduce the terms he asked for then before they consider making a move.

Even then, the club are said to be concerned by Calvert-Lewin’s injury record.

At this stage, there is nothing advanced on Newcastle’s interest and no offer has been made.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin salary demands and injury record

Back in April, it was claimed by The Chronicle that Calvert-Lewin’s wage demands were around the £100k-per-week mark.

That would make him one of Newcastle’s highest-paid players. Given he’s unlikely to be starting ahead of Isak on a regular basis, that would be a huge call.

His injury record is certainly something to consider. While 19 Premier League starts last season is by no means a dreadful return, he has missed 83 games since the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

Everton statistics Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Games 273

Goals 71

Assists 22

Game missed through injury 111

Game-winning goals 18

Calvert-Lewin would be a logical addition to replace Wilson. He wouldn’t need to start every single game and has already proven himself in the Premier League.

Still, the deal would have to be right for Newcastle. There is no sense in paying over the odds in terms of salary for a player who will surely be a back-up at best.
