Aston Villa step up recruitment drive with swoop for England goalkeeper

The 25-year-old has agreed a two-year deal following her release by Barcelona.

Capped 11 times by England, Roebuck won a Women’s Super League title and three FA Cups with Manchester City, while she was also part of the Lionesses squad which won the 2022 European Championships and reached the World Cup final a year later.

But she has made only two club appearances in the last two years and underwent a lengthy recovery after suffering a stroke in December, 2023.

The move to Villa, completed after Barcelona agreed to terminate her contract a year early, now provides the chance to rebuild and show she can still perform at the top level.

Villa Women sporting director Marisa Ewers said: “We are delighted that Ellie will be joining our club.

“She is an exciting addition to the team and is a player with a lot of experience who can help drive our performance levels.”

The signing of Roebuck comes hot on the heels of Netherlands international defender Lynn Wilms.

Wilms, currently representing the Dutch at Euro 2025, made more than 100 appearances for VFL Wolfsburg during a four-year stay with the Bundesliga club.

Ewers said: “Lynn is a player with plenty of experience at the highest level.

“She has performed on the Champions League stage and we all hope she can help contribute to our own aspirations in qualifying for Europe in the years to come.”
