Fabrizio Romano has given his latest on the negotiations between Liverpool and Napoli over Darwin Nunez.
Even the least clued-up Liverpool fan is aware that the Uruguayan is packing his bags this summer.
Over the course of 46 appearances in all competitions, he managed just seven goals and seven assists – a return widely viewed as insufficient for a player expected to lead Liverpool’s attack..
This drop in starting opportunities coincided with speculation that Liverpool would owe Benfica an extra €5 million if Nunez reached 60 starts for the club.
However, Arne Slot publicly dismissed these suggestions, insisting there was no truth to the claims and that team selection was not influenced by contractual clauses
It was reported last night (Monday) that Napoli have made a concrete move for the Liverpool striker, submitting an official bid of €50 million plus €5 million in add-ons (approximately £43 million guaranteed).
The Serie A champions are actively pursuing the Uruguayan forward as Antonio Conte looks to strengthen his attacking options for the upcoming season.
But now, speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano seemed to suggest that Napoli’s bid of €50 million plus an extra five in bonuses that was being reported is not going to be enough:
“50 million euros was never going to be enough for Liverpool despite the reports we had in the recent hours,” Romano asserted.
“Napoli know with that kind of money Liverpool will never accept a proposal for Darwin Nunez, but in the next days/weeks Napoli are expected to try again for Darwin. He remains their top target.”
“I told you everything about this story, how Nunez opened the door to Napoli two weeks ago, how Napoli opened started negotiation with a mission more than 10 days ago.”
“Napoli remain focused on this Darwin Nunez deal,” the Italian transfer guru finished off saying.
It’s been reported that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has personally intervened in discussions, in dialogue with Fali Ramadani – the agent tasked with managing the possible transfer.
