Casemiro has been linked with a move away this summer, and so Man United could sign his replacement.
Aside from needing to strengthen in attacking areas, Ruben Amorim also wants to improve in midfield, in order to help take control of more Premier League games, after United lacked a ‘general’ in the middle of the park last year.
They had previously been linked to a Serie A midfielder, but he was deemed an unrealistic target. However, it now seems that United have reignited their interest in him, and could make a bid for him soon.
Man United in talks with Ederson
According to Goal.com Brazil, Man United, Inter Milan and Juventus are all interested in Ederson, who has to be considered as one of the best holding midfielders in world football. The report says that all three clubs are in talks over a deal for the Brazilian, who is reportedly priced at £52m by Atalanta.
The 26-year-old made 49 appearances for the Serie A side last year, scoring five goals, and providing two assists. He is very much a possession-based midfielder, who likes to control the ball in the middle of the park, something that Man United struggled to do under Amorim last season.
Although he won’t come cheap, if United could sign Ederson, it would be seen as a massive coup, considering that the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and Arsenal were all in for the Brazilian last summer. The sale of someone like Alejandro Garnacho could all but pay for a deal for Ederson, so it certainly can’t be ruled out from happening.
Man United could opt for a cheaper alternative
If a deal for Ederson fails to happen, Man United have already identified a cheaper alternative. This could be more realistic considering their situation regarding Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
Ndidi made 30 appearances for Leicester last year, scoring one goal and providing five assists. Although he wouldn’t be as impactful as Ederson, he would help to fill the void left if Casemiro does make an exit, especially considering that United have already lost Eriksen.
