Leeds United know a move for Nick Pope won't be straightforward this summer with Newcastle United wanting to keep the 33-year-old at St. James' Park.
According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Pope also wants to stay with the Magpies, despite interest from Daniel Farke's side, with Champions League football on the horizon in the North East. Newcastle have a bloated goalkeeping department and are hoping to sign Burnley's standout performer from last season, James Trafford.
The arrival of the 22-year-old England youth international would add more competition for places, with Eddie Howe needing to offload players in order to trim his 25-man squad for the Premier League.
If Trafford were to sign for the Toon, it would mean the club have five first-team goalkeepers, with Pope, Mark Gillespie, John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos also on their books.
The interest in Trafford has only intensified speculation regarding Pope's future, with Leeds looking for a new number one in an attempt to stay in the top flight.
Farke made the huge call to drop Illan Meslier for the few games of last season in order to get Leeds over the line and win promotion. Former Magpies' goalkeeper Karl Darlow came into the fold and helped the Whites win promotion as champions following a 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle on the final day of the season.
That decision to drop Meslier has also created speculation regarding his future, with interest from clubs in France and Turkey in recent weeks.
As things stand, Leeds have been pretty active in the transfer window with Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol and Sebastian Bernauw joining the club. Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff is also in talks to bolster Farke's squad ahead of next season, after a bid of £10million, plus £2million in add-ons was agreed.
