'Still think': Mark Douglas offers update after Newcastle linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of the options Newcastle United are considering this summer following the departure of Callum Wilson.

Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle have held talks with Calvert-Lewin, albeit that is very different to actually making a move.

Calvert-Lewin is available on a free transfer but there are concerns.

Indeed, Newcastle want Calvert-Lewin to reduce his wage demands, while they are slightly worried about the striker’s injury record over recent years.

Newcastle have long been linked with the 28-year-old, but Mark Douglas of iNews is not convinced he’ll end up joining.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin may not join Newcastle United

On social media platform X, Douglas responded to insight from Luke Edwards in which he talked about Newcastle’s interest in the player.

Still, he did add that he believed William Osula being trusted as Alexander Isak’s back-up next season along with the addition of a versatile forward in the mould of Joao Pedro is the most likely scenario to unfold at Newcastle this summer.

Pedro, of course, was a leading target for Newcastle but he instead joined Chelsea from Brighton.

Alan Pardew compares Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Viktor Gyokeres

If Newcastle were able to sign Calvert-Lewin without breaking the bank, it looks a fairly logical addition.

Still, and with all due respect to the 11-cap England international, he’s unlikely to be a name to get Newcastle fans all too excited.

That’s not to suggest he’d be a bad signing by any means, just that he is perhaps not the most exciting name Newcastle could sign this summer.

However, former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew believes there’s not a huge amount of difference between Calvert-Lewin at his best and Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres has been linked with a huge money move to the Premier League after scoring 54 goals in 52 games for the Portuguese giants last season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Pardew said: “On their day, there’s not much between them, if you know what I mean.

“If Calvert-Lewin has a day and Gyokeres has a day, they’re very similar. But, of course, the consistency level of Calvert-Lewin and the fact he’s not really on the pitch that often is the big, big problem with him.”
