Former Manchester United midfielder and current Napoli star Scott McTominay has returned to England this week for a very special occasion.

The 28-year-old was sold by Erik ten Hag last year as he attempted to fund a move for a central midfielder. United bagged £25.7m of pure profit by selling McTominay which helped fund the signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG.

Since moving to Italy, McTominay has rejuvenated his career. Utilised mainly in central and attacking midfield, McTominay took Serie A by storm scoring 12 goals in 34 appearances in the top flight as the Naples club won the title.

McTominay's form has led some to question whether it was a mistake letting him go, particularly considering United's struggles last season. But it now seems impossible to reverse this decision even if the Scotland international is back in England this week.

The midfielder took to Instagram to share a selfie of himself and his mother being chauffeured to Wimbledon for the first round of quarter-finals. It is expected that the ex-United star will be in the Royal Box on Centre Court on Tuesday, following in the footsteps of sporting icons Gary Lineker, Anthony Joshua and John Cena who have been among the stars to attend the All England Club this year.

Celebrities cannot pay for access to the Royal Box during The Championships, instead they are invited by the All England Club to watch the action and enjoy the hospitality. McTominay is set for an exciting day on Centre Court with two quarter-finals scheduled to be taking place.

First up, No.1 seed in the women's draw Aryna Sabalenka will take on Germany's Laura Siegemund for a place in the last four before the final Brit left standing in the singles draw, Cameron Norrie, takes on Spain's second seed Carlos Alcaraz to wrap up the day. While McTominay is clearly catching the eye in Italy, he is highly unlikely to return to United's radar.

The Reds are currently prioritising a move for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo to play as a No.10 in Ruben Amorim's system. It is believed another central midfielder is one of United's lesser priorities this summer.
