Liverpool fans should be getting goosebumps after what's just been said about Florian Wirtz - opinion

Liverpool’s transfer of Florian Wirtz is undoubtedly one of the most exciting moves made by a Premier League team this summer.

The attacking midfielder cost Liverpool £116million, which ended up breaking their record for the most expensive player bought by the Anfield outfit.

The German is just 22 years old, but he’s already widely regarded as one of the best players in his position.

He contributed to over 30 goals across all competitions last season, and with the help of players such as Mohamed Salah, next season, he could well end up hitting similar figures this term.

Most fans from other teams are more than likely rather envious of the Reds’ transfer business this summer, with Arne Slot’s men looking to be the team to beat once again.

Tim Steidten shares what Florian Wirtz told him while he was at Bayer Leverkusen

Wirtz started his career with Koln but was bought by Bayer Leverkusen early on in his career, where he became the player he is today.

He has already had a major injury in his career as he ruptured his ACL a couple of seasons ago but he somehow managed to come back from it even stronger.

Since he’s been around Leverkusen’s first team, it was evident that he’d be an impressive player, but few could’ve predicted how good he’d actually become.

And, as per a report from Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, it seems like Wirtz knew this himself, as former Leverkusen director Tim Steidten shared what the German told him when he signed him up.

“Many people ask me whether he will be able to establish himself at Liverpool. For me, that is beyond question. My answer is always clear: yes,” he said.

“I remember our first conversation with him in Simon Rolfes’ office very well – his parents were there too.

“Simon asked him, ‘Where do you want to go, what do you want to achieve?’ And Florian replied, ‘I want to become the best player in the world.'”

Liverpool are in safe hands with Arne Slot at the helm

If Slot winning the Premier League title during his first season in charge of Liverpool wasn’t enough to convince fans that he’s the man to take them forward, then his business in the 2025-26 summer transfer window certainly will.

The Dutchman has acted quickly and has managed to sign all of his main targets for the priority positions he needed to reinforce.

Indeed, many may question why Wirtz was brought in when the club already have Dominik Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott at their disposal, but the fact that the German can be played in multiple positions helps solve that issue.

Indeed, the young German hasn’t kicked a football for Liverpool just yet, but with the form he’s shown over the past couple of seasons with Leverkusen, it’s hard to see how he won’t hit the ground running at Anfield this term.

This is why Liverpool fans should be getting goosebumps about their new arrival making his debut soon.
