Bajkowski: Savinho path opens up for Man City after transfer embargo ends

Manchester City were blocked from doing deals with Girona last season but can send players to the La Liga club once again

Manchester City are open to sending players to Girona again after UEFA relaxed their decision to block moves between the clubs. That decision was made last season as a result of both City Football Group clubs playing in the Champions League, but Girona failed to qualify for this season.

That means that the Blues are able to send players on loan to the La Liga club again, and at least one if not more from Pep Guardiola's current squad could end up there for the upcoming season.

It is easy to see the appeal for City in sending their emerging talent to shine in La Liga - one of the toughest competitions in world football. Aleix Garcia, Yan Couto, Douglas Luiz and Yangel Herrera are among those to have improved their reputation on loan with the Spanish clubs.

The biggest successes have been in the wider CFG, with striker Taty Castellanos earning a permanent move to Lazio after a loan there from New York City and Savinho dazzling on loan from Troyes before signing for City in 2024.

Savinho was unable to replicate the level of goals and assists he got in Spain during his first season in Manchester, but has been backed to improve. Guardiola had positive words for him during the Club World Cup about his decision-making in the final third and he is still backed to be a big part of City's future.

Hugo Viana and his recruitment team are still working out what Guardiola's squad is going to look like with the coming season, with no final decisions made on everyone who will be in it. That includes calls on defender Vitor Reis and midfielder Claudio Echeverri, who have already been linked with loans to Girona.

It would make sense for City to make their decisions this month, allowing any players that are going to be able to have pre-season with their new team to settle in. However, Girona's targets may depend on who they are able to get from elsewhere as they plan for another year of being competitive in La Liga.

Girona are yet to strengthen this summer and know that they cannot afford to get complacent as they look to climb the league again.
