The Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics are rumored to still have Al Horford on their NBA free agency wish list. However, they could lose their pursuit of the 18-year-veteran to retirement.
Almost all the big names available in NBA free agency this summer are off the board. However, there are still a few intriguing players available that could make an impact in 2025-26. One of the most notable that is not a restricted free agent is Celtics great Al Horford. Yet, his time on the market could end soon, and also his lengthy NBA career.
“Horford’s future remains unclear. A league source said Monday that Horford is taking his time while assessing offers from multiple teams but added that the 39-year-old is considering retirement, too,” Boston Globe reporter Adam Himmelsbach reports.

The Warriors and their team full of future Hall of Famers is believed to be one of Horford’s top suitors. They lost Kevon Looney in free agency and need more front-court depth. However, they are limited financially and can only offer the $5.7 million veterans mid-level exception. They will be a title contender next season, and they will certainly appeal to the 39-year-old in what could be his final season.
Heading into the summer, it looked likely that the five-time All-Star’s second run in Boston would come to an end. They needed to slash a lot of payroll, and letting him walk in free agency was expected to help achieve that goal. However, after trading both Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday recently, they have some financial wiggle room to bring him back. But at a reduced cost.
Despite being well passed his prime, Horford played a notable role in Boston’s championship win last summer. And he remained a rock-solid impact player this past season. His leadership, rebounding, and ability to stretch the floor as a big would benefit both Boston and Golden State.
