Report: After Sean Longstaff, another Newcastle star could suddenly follow him out the door

Sean Longstaff is not the only player who could leave Newcastle United this summer.

The Magpies have entered a period of change, as the 2025/26 season looms. Anthony Elanga is going to join the club, while Sean Longstaff is close to signing for Leeds United.

The newly-promoted side are aiming to strike a £12million deal for Longstaff, as the local lad prepares to say goodbye to his boyhood club.

It will be sad to see Longstaff leave St James’ Park, and he is not the only long-serving Newcastle United player who could be calling time on his Toon career.

Martin Dubravka’s Newcastle United career at risk of ending

Newcastle United are making big changes to their goalkeeping department, which could result in Martin Dubravka departing.

That is according to the Athletic, who report that the 36-year-old is ‘likely’ to leave the club if James Trafford signs for the Magpies.

Trafford has agreed personal terms with Newcastle, as Toon officials aim to agree a fee with Burnley for the 22-year-old. While talk of a deal being imminent has proven to be premature, Trafford is still expected to sign for Newcastle.

His arrival could be bad news for Dubravka, who signed a new contract at St James’ Park in February after snubbing a move to Saudi Arabia.

Why Martin Dubravka will have to leave Newcastle United

If Trafford arrives, Newcastle United will have six senior goalkeepers. That is simply far too many.

The club have passed up the opportunity to reduce that number already this summer, with John Ruddy signing a contract extension. Mark Gillespie has also extended his stay, with both players responsible for upholding standards in training.

The goalkeeper that Newcastle would like to move on is Odysseas Vlachodimos, who arrived for £20million last summer. However, Newcastle cannot really sell Vlachodimos for PSR reasons, as they will never recoup that kind of fee for him. That is why a loan exit is most likely.

That would leave Nick Pope and Trafford battling it out to be number one, while Dubravka would be third choice. In that respect, it makes sense for the Slovakian to move on.

It remains to be seen where Dubravka could go next, but his future certainly appears to lie elsewhere.
